AREA 02A / MULDERSDRIFT WORKING CLUSTER

ANCIENT GROUND. PRESENT-DAY SITE QUESTIONS.

Kromdraai is working countryside inside a landscape of international heritage importance. Holdings, visitor properties, roads and active development still need practical survey information—but the setting deserves to be understood rather than treated like an interchangeable suburb.

Respect the ground. Understand the brief. Measure what the project actually needs.

WHY THIS AREA

WHERE MINI CIVILS FITS

Projects here can involve irregular rural sites, long access routes, existing buildings, visible rock, drainage changes and development that must fit around what is already on the ground. A useful topographical survey records the features that affect the next decision instead of filling a drawing with indiscriminate points.

Construction set-out and verification are planned around the approved design, accessible control and the actual limits of the instruction. Survey information supports the project; it does not replace any heritage, environmental, planning or cadastral approval the site may require.

THE AREA IN MOTION // KROMDRAAI

ACTIVE SCIENCE. WORKING FARMS. VISITOR GROUND.

Kromdraai is not merely a label inside the Cradle. It is an active scientific landscape surrounded by rural properties, visitor destinations and ordinary site questions that still need practical answers.

Context matters here. Survey information never replaces heritage or environmental approval.
01

RESEARCH / HERITAGE

THE EXCAVATION STORY IS STILL OPEN.

Research has continued long after the first fossil discoveries. That makes Kromdraai living scientific ground rather than a historical display sealed in the past.

02

TOURISM / HOSPITALITY

THE LANDSCAPE BRINGS PEOPLE IN.

Routes through the Cradle support lodges, restaurants, reserves and activity venues. Those properties still need access, drainage, services, building positions and reliable records of what exists.

03

RURAL DEVELOPMENT

IRREGULAR SITES NEED CLEARER BRIEFS.

Farm portions, rock, long access routes and changing terrain make a generic urban survey specification a poor fit. The useful features must be agreed before the fieldwork starts.

GROUND NOTE // KROMDRAAI

THE DISCOVERY STARTED IN 1938. THE EXCAVATION STORY IS STILL BEING WRITTEN.

Robert Broom identified Kromdraai as a fossil site in 1938. Since then, teams from archaeology, geology, biology and other disciplines have returned to piece together evidence from the beginning of the Quaternary period. Kromdraai entered the UNESCO World Heritage listing in 1999 as part of the Fossil Hominid Sites of South Africa. This is not history sealed behind glass: it remains an active scientific landscape.

THREE CORE ACTIVITIES

ALMOST EVERY SITE QUESTION STARTS HERE.

TYPICAL REQUESTS

WHAT THE WORK MAY INCLUDE

  • Pre-design topographical surveys
  • Building positions and working offsets
  • Road, access and service information
  • Platforms, levels and drainage
  • As-built records
  • Independent position and level checks

FIELD LOGIC // KROMDRAAI

A HERITAGE LANDSCAPE STILL HAS ORDINARY CONSTRUCTION PROBLEMS.

The international story beneath Kromdraai is exceptional. The immediate site questions can still be straightforward: where is the proposed structure, how does the ground fall, what already exists and did the completed work land where the design intended? The setting changes the care required—not the need for clear answers.

Detailed field stories are being prepared for , the forthcoming Mini Civils project portfolio.

ANOTHER ONE OF MY DAD'S SAYINGS

“DON'T BE GREEDY. LET THE SUN SHINE ON EVERYONE.”

NOT EVERY JOB NEEDS TO BE OURS.

We take on work when the scope, programme and travel make sense. If someone in our network is closer, has more suitable equipment or specialises in exactly what the project needs, we will say so and help point the client in the right direction.

The right person. The right equipment. The right job. Zero BS.

SEND THE LOCATION. SEND THE QUESTION.

WE'LL TELL YOU IF IT MAKES SENSE.

Include the site location, what is being built or checked, the approximate site size, available drawings and the required timeframe.
